How do you manage work-life balance?
Tiffany Brown
Vice President, Sponsorship & Events Marketing San Francisco, CA
Work-life balance is a choice — daily, weekly, monthly, yearly. Work plays a very important role in my life. Managing through change and ambiguity can cause me to lose focus on just how important balance is. In fact balance contributes to making things easier. I try and focus on two strategies.
1. Step away from my computer. Walking around the floor and saying “Hi” to a coworker or getting outside at lunch and walking in San Francisco can make a difference. I am more productive because I have a fresh perspective, and I’m doing something healthy for my heart
by not sitting all day. Fresh air truly has a powerful grounding effect on personal priorities during work hours.
2. Manage my day; don’t let the day manage me. This resonates specifically to the volume of email I receive in a day and how late I stay in the office. Email can vampire my time. I may feel productive with the quick win of watching my unread emails dwindle, but they are distracting me from the important tasks I need to accomplish. Time management is very important. Planning my day in the morning or the night before can assist with the energy-distracting activities that always happen.
By managing my day and stepping away for a moment, I find that I have time to think about my priorities, dreams, goals, and ambitions.

I maintain a work-life balance by trying to recognize my stress triggers and know- ing how to work through them. I find work to be challenging and rewarding at different times and know to worry less about things I can’t control and plan for things I can. In my personal life I find that running is my release. I started running about two years ago when I needed an outlet to release tension. I enjoy the alone time and trying to compete against myself to improve my personal best. Recently, a group of friends challenged each other to a weight loss challenge, “The Biggest Loser.” I have made an extra effort to exercise more and also eat well-balanced healthy meals. Through hard work my body has come to appreciate a healthier lifestyle, and that makes me feel good inside and out.
