MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR
New York. Summer brought periodic sweltering humidity and some soaking rains to the East, while the West Coast suffered a continuing drought of historic severity and a season of devastating wildfires. Californians did themselves proud by exceeding the state’s water-reduction mandate in order to conserve this most precious of natural resources. We Easterners would gladly have given them some of our water if we could. Instead, we unfolded our umbrellas and thought about climate change.
Our colleagues in Latin America experienced a variety of winter weather, including heavy rains that ended the drought in Chile — while arid conditions continued in other parts of the continent. The forthcoming El Niño, one of the strongest in decades, is predicted to cause further extreme weather events.
Human beings have a remarkable capacity to embrace change. In this issue, we feature some exciting changes at MUFG, through interviews with our new top leaders in the Americas, Sugu Mike and Steve Cummings, a report about collaboration with our Thai sister bank, Krungsri, and a history of the bank’s operations in Canada.
We also highlight vacation getaways (e.g., yours truly, above), work-life balance, and three individual colleagues.
